About Technology
The Technology function within the Technology, Finance and Investment Admin department provides IT services to the Fidelity International business, globally. These include the development and support of business applications that underpin our revenue, operational, compliance, finance, legal, marketing and customer service functions. The broader organisation incorporates Infrastructure services that the firm relies on to operate on a day to day basis including data centre, networks, proximity services, security, voice, incident management and remediation.
The UNIX team is responsible for approximately 1400 OS instances within Fidelity and its subsidiaries. The estate is predominantly IBM, Oracle and HP, running AIX, Solaris and RedHat Linux. The UNIX engineering team is responsible for owning the approved product set in this space, of ensuring that the technology portfolio available to the business is up to date and relevant. We may also be called upon engineer bespoke solutions, and for general consultancy and project support, both infrastructure and business.
About your role
As a senior member of the UNIX engineering team, this role requires an enterprise frame of mind combined with exposure to a broad range of technical subjects. While the role will specialise in RedHat Enterprise Linux, with Solaris x86 and AIX experience desirable, you will be required to work closely with the other component teams (Middleware, Web, Networks, Security etc) to ensure that the output from our group meets the needs of our users, and links with the technology strategy in the wider organisation. This may be in the form of technology releases, roadmaps or technical guidance.
This is a highly challenging but rewarding role where you will be expected to act as a point of reference within the team, lead by example and also play a key role in assisting with mentoring staff in UK and India.
About You
You will be an experienced technology specialist, with a strong disposition to take ownership and to lead by example - perhaps from an engineering, architecture or senior systems administration background. You will have a passion for using technology intelligently to make the business run better. You may already work in the financial services sector.
Day-to-day you will have an ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. To achieve this, you will be organised, with good attention to detail and an ability to prioritise your workload and objectives. You will demonstrate a structured and methodical approach to your work, which will shine through in your problem solving ability, and in your documentation. Strong communication skills and an approachable demeanour will ensure you work well with the rest of the team, and the wider organisation, and ensure get your messages across clearly.
Your key responsibilities
• Provide technical Best Practice recommendations for Solaris x86 and Redhat builds
• Join team of “Platform Guardians”
• Advise on engineering Unix standards for layered technologies (e.g. Cluster)
• Provide clear technical documentation describing Unix environments, standards and roadmaps
• Engage with Infrastructure and Enterprise Architects to provide Proof of Concept solutions
• Work with Core Unix team to ensure new solutions are Ready For Service
Essential skills
• Strong technical skills in Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 and above, including experience with RHEV / KVM and VMWare
• Experience with AIX and/or Solaris x86 and their associated virtualisation technologies (e.g. Zones, LPARs)
• Experience in defining enterprise class Unix standard builds and solutions
• Clear Understanding of the challenges of enterprise infrastructure, e.g. Build, Security, Identity Management, Operations
• In-depth scripting abilities using shell, perl and php
• An ability to identify tasks which should be automated and then create solutions to automate them
• Flexibility to travel between locations in the South East United Kingdom and India
• A keen desire to learn.
Desirable skills
• Creation/maintenance of Satellite/Spacewalk and Kickstart/PXE/Jumpstart servers
• A working knowledge HP Server hardware
• Working knowledge of Netbackup, HP Openview, Control-M
• Working knowledge of SAN storage and host-based configuration
• Familiarity with ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management
